Estonian Football Round-Up: Harju Surge, Levadia Keep Winning and Narva Trans Near the Drop

Estonian Football Round-Up: Harju Surge, Levadia Keep Winning and Narva Trans Near the Drop

The Premium Liiga season is approaching its conclusion, with the battles for European qualification, survival and the remaining league positions becoming increasingly intense. Harju JK Laagri are finishing the campaign in remarkable form, FCI Levadia continue to win despite already securing the title, and Narva Trans are running out of time to save their top-flight status.

Here is a look at five of the biggest talking points from the latest round of Estonian football.

Nõmme United Dominate Kalju in the Derby

Nõmme United claimed back-to-back derby victories over Nõmme Kalju with a commanding 3–0 win, delivering another blow to Kalju’s European ambitions.

Zakaria Beglarišvili opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before Nikita Vassiljev doubled United’s advantage just 13 minutes later. Only two minutes after that, Danyl Mashenko turned Henri Järvelaid’s cross into his own net to put the game beyond Kalju.

United also celebrated their first clean sheet of the Premium Liiga season, ending a remarkable wait that stretched back to March 2024.

For Kalju, however, the situation is becoming increasingly concerning. Having started the campaign with five consecutive victories, they have now won just two of their last eight league matches. With difficult fixtures against Flora, Paide and champions Levadia still to come, their hopes of securing European football are under serious pressure.

Meanwhile, Eric Wynalda’s United have shown they can trouble their local rivals, although their overall form remains inconsistent. Their relegation battle is not yet over, but this derby victory provides a significant boost.

Harju Are Finishing the Season in Style

Harju JK Laagri are producing one of the strongest runs of form in the league, extending their unbeaten streak to five matches with a 2–0 victory over Pärnu Vaprus.

Karel Eerme opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Joonas Sild fouled Andreas Vaher. Harju then capitalised on a costly Vaprus mistake in the second half, with Abdul Wahid Binate intercepting a misplaced pass before setting up Marten Henrik Kelement to seal the victory.

The result marked Harju’s fourth consecutive clean sheet, underlining their growing defensive strength.

Their recent performances have been so impressive that, based on the last eight matches alone, Harju would sit second in the Premium Liiga table. That is a remarkable achievement for a side whose main priority has been securing its place in the division.

Kelement was confident after the match, suggesting that even Flora and Levadia could struggle against Harju in their current form.

While their focus remains on finishing the season strongly, their late surge has also put pressure on the teams above them.

Levadia Continue Winning After Securing the Title

FCI Levadia have shown no signs of easing off after being crowned Estonian champions, recording another 2–0 victory away to Kuressaare.

The champions took the lead in the 13th minute when Enock Otoo’s dangerous cross was turned into his own net by Marco Lukka. Wendell then secured the three points in the 66th minute, finishing from close range after a delivery from Alexandre Lopes Gomes.

Levadia were able to rotate their squad, with Mihkel Ainsalu and Mark Oliver Roosnupp absent and Karl Andre Vallner among the substitutes. Nevertheless, they maintained their high standards and controlled much of the contest.

Otoo was one of the standout performers, taking his opportunity to impress on the left wing. Meanwhile, Joseph Saliste celebrated his 350th Premium Liiga appearance, nearly marking the occasion with a spectacular goal that struck the crossbar.

The result continued Levadia’s remarkable record against Kuressaare. They have now won nine consecutive matches against the islanders and are unbeaten in their last 13 meetings.

With the title already secured, Levadia’s ability to keep collecting points and maintaining their intensity is another sign of their dominance this season.

Flora End Tammeka’s Medal Hopes

Flora dealt a decisive blow to Tartu Tammeka’s unlikely push for a medal, winning 2–0 in Tallinn.

Erik Sorga opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 21st minute after Oliver Kangaslahti handled the ball. Eleven minutes later, Tony Varjund’s pressing helped create another opportunity, with Sander Alamaa finishing to double Flora’s advantage.

Tammeka had started brightly and could have taken the lead themselves, but they were unable to recover after conceding twice in the first half.

Sorga could have added further goals, but Tammeka goalkeeper Kristen Lapa produced several important saves to keep his team in the contest. Varjund also deserves recognition for his contribution, with his intelligent pressing helping to create both goals.

The defeat leaves Tammeka 11 points behind Flora and 10 behind Paide with four rounds remaining, making their medal ambitions all but over.

Their focus may now shift towards catching Nõmme Kalju in fourth place. However, Harju are also closing in, with the gap between fifth and sixth down to just three points.

After a difficult week against direct rivals, Tammeka must now fight to protect their position rather than looking upwards.

Paide Push Narva Trans Closer to Relegation

Paide Linnameeskond secured a hard fought 2–1 victory over Narva Trans, leaving the visitors facing an increasingly desperate battle to remain in the Premium Liiga.

Juan Palacios opened the scoring in the 18th minute after an excellent through ball from Daniel Cabral. Trans responded well after falling behind and equalised shortly after half time through Wisdom Awusi, who finished following Tomas Berardozzi’s work.

However, Paide found a winner in the 77th minute when Martin Miller’s header ended up in the net after a goalmouth scramble involving goalkeeper Daniil Pareiko and defender Murad Velijev.

Trans had their opportunities and Pareiko made several excellent saves, but another narrow defeat left them with very little room for error.

After 32 matches, Trans have just 20 points and sit 11 points behind Nõmme United, with only four games remaining. They need to win every remaining fixture and hope United drop points just to have a chance of reaching the relegation play-off position.

United, meanwhile, need only two more points to mathematically guarantee finishing above Trans. Kuressaare are already beyond Trans’ reach.

Although survival is still mathematically possible, the situation looks increasingly bleak for Narva. Their remaining matches have effectively become must win fixtures.

Despite the difficult circumstances, midfielder German Šlein insisted that the team must continue fighting until the final whistle of the season.

The Final Rounds Promise Plenty of Drama

With the season nearing its conclusion, several key battles remain unresolved.

Levadia have already secured the championship, but their relentless form continues to set the standard. Behind them, Paide and Flora are battling for the remaining top positions, while Kalju’s worrying decline has opened the door for Tammeka and Harju to challenge them.

At the other end of the table, Harju’s impressive run has strengthened their position, while Kuressaare, Vaprus and Nõmme United remain involved in the fight to avoid the relegation play-off.

For Narva Trans, the challenge is even greater. Their top flight future hangs by a thread, and they have almost no margin for error.

The final rounds could still bring major changes to the table. European qualification, survival and the battle for the remaining places are all on the line as Estonian football heads towards the end of another dramatic Premium Liiga season.
