Estonian Football Round-Up: Trans Relegated as Medal and Survival Battles Intensify

Estonian Football Round-Up: Trans Relegated as Medal and Survival Battles Intensify

The Premium Liiga season is approaching its conclusion, and the pressure is mounting at both ends of the table. Narva Trans have seen their long-standing top-flight status come to an end, while Nõmme United have strengthened their survival hopes. Meanwhile, Paide Linnameeskond have moved into second place, Nõmme Kalju have closed the gap on Flora, and champions FCI Levadia continue to find ways to win late.

Narva Trans Relegated After 36 Years in the Top Flight

Narva Trans’ long run in Estonia’s top division has come to an end following a 5–1 defeat away to Tartu Tammeka. Trans needed a victory to keep their survival hopes alive, but despite taking the lead through Ahmad Gero in the 20th minute, they were unable to prevent a heavy defeat.

Moussa Felix Sambe was central to Tammeka’s comeback, scoring twice and providing two assists. Pavel Marin, Pedro Manoel and Romet Silov also found the net as Tammeka took control after Sambe’s equaliser in the 36th minute.

Trans’ relegation marks a significant moment in Estonian football. Alongside Flora, they had featured in every Premium Liiga season since Estonia regained independence. From next season, Flora will be the only club to maintain that record.

The decline has been building for some time. Trans have struggled for consistency, collecting just four points across their 12 league matches since their last victory on 31 July. Head coach David Campana was appointed when the club still had a cushion over the relegation places, but results failed to improve sufficiently to keep them safe.

The question now is whether Trans can rebuild in the second tier and mount a quick return to the Premium Liiga.

Nõmme United Keep Survival Hopes Alive with Vaprus Win

While Trans’ fate has been sealed, the fight to avoid the relegation play-off remains wide open. Nõmme United boosted their chances with a 4–2 victory over Pärnu Vaprus, recording a second consecutive league win.

Vaprus took an early lead through Matthias Limberg, but Egert Õunapuu equalised after reacting quickest to a rebound. Simon Geiger then scored his first Premium Liiga goal to put United ahead, before Õunapuu struck again and Adyn Torres added a fourth. Henri Järvelaid was another key contributor, providing two assists.

The result leaves Vaprus on 36 points, Kuressaare on 35 and United on 34. With three clubs separated by just two points, the battle to avoid the relegation play-off is set to go down to the wire.

United’s record against Vaprus has been particularly impressive. They have scored 14 league goals against Pärnu this season, including a 7–1 win earlier in the campaign, and also knocked them out of the Estonian Cup.

The match also included a worrying incident involving United defender Ricky Chanda, who suffered a medical emergency at half-time and was taken for medical attention. His teammates dedicated Geiger’s goal celebration to him, using his shirt number, 55. The club and supporters will be hoping for his recovery.

Paide Move into Second as Palacios Decides Kuressaare Match

Paide Linnameeskond have taken control of the silver-medal race after a narrow 1–0 away victory over Kuressaare.

Juan Palacios scored the only goal in the 38th minute, producing a precise left-footed finish into the far top corner after good work from Pedro Andrade and Siim Luts. Despite difficult autumn conditions, Palacios provided the decisive moment in a match where both goalkeepers made important contributions.

Kuressaare improved after the break and pushed for an equaliser, but Paide held on. The hosts finished with more shots on target, 7–6, while Paide recorded more attempts overall, 17–11.

The win lifted Paide to 60 points and second place, two points ahead of Flora. Finishing second would be a significant achievement for Paide, who have only finished runners-up once before, in 2020.

Kuressaare, meanwhile, remain caught in the relegation battle on 35 points, just one ahead of United. Their upcoming fixtures could prove decisive at both ends of the table, with Paide chasing silver and Kuressaare fighting to stay clear of the play-off position.

Levadia Snatch Dramatic Late Victory Over Harju

FCI Levadia marked their 28th anniversary with a dramatic 2–1 win over Harju Laagri, extending their unbeaten league run to 15 matches.

Harju made an excellent start, with Daniil Rudenko opening the scoring in the 10th minute with a superb long-range strike into the top corner. Geovani brought Levadia level in the 29th minute after combining with Wendell.

The match became increasingly complicated for Levadia when striker Nikoloz Kutateladze was sent off for violent conduct shortly before half-time. A penalty awarded to Levadia in the second half was subsequently overturned following a VAR review, with Frank Liivak booked for simulation.

Harju also finished with ten men after Joseph-Albert Ndakala received a second yellow card. Levadia took advantage in stoppage time, with Maksimilian Skvortsov scoring in the 90+6th minute to secure all three points.

The result ended Harju’s six-match unbeaten run and once again highlighted Levadia’s ability to produce late winners. They have repeatedly turned tight matches in their favour with goals in the closing stages, a valuable quality as they continue to set the standard in the Premium Liiga.

Kalju Beat Flora to Reignite the Medal Race

Nõmme Kalju secured a crucial 2–1 victory over FC Flora, keeping their own medal hopes alive while adding further pressure to Flora’s position in the standings.

Kalju made a flying start at Hiiu, with Mattias Männilaan scoring in the third minute before converting a penalty three minutes later. Flora were caught cold once again after conceding early in their previous match against Harju.

Sergei Zenjov pulled one back for Flora in the 13th minute, but Kalju defended their advantage for the remainder of the match. Flora improved after the break and applied pressure, yet struggled to create enough clear-cut opportunities to find an equaliser.

Männilaan was the standout performer, scoring both goals and coming close to completing a hat-trick. Kalju captain Henri Perk also returned to the starting line-up after missing five matches.

The victory leaves Flora third, with Kalju just four points behind and holding a game in hand. Kalju have also established a four-point advantage over fifth-placed Tartu Tammeka.

Flora’s recent form has become a concern, with just three points collected from their last five matches since the international break. Paide have capitalised on that downturn, moving into second place and putting themselves in a strong position in the race for silver.

With Paide, Flora and Kalju still competing for the top positions, the remaining fixtures could have a major influence on the final standings.

The Final Stretch: Pressure at Both Ends

The latest results have created an increasingly compelling finish to the Premium Liiga season. Levadia continue to demonstrate their ability to win difficult matches, while Paide have moved ahead of Flora in the battle for second place.

Kalju remain firmly in contention for a medal after their victory over Flora, and United’s win over Vaprus has intensified the relegation battle. For Kuressaare and Vaprus, every remaining point could be vital, while Trans must begin preparing for life outside the top flight.

With so much still to be decided, the closing rounds promise plenty of drama across the Estonian top division.
