Estonian Football Round-Up: Levadia Make History as the Battles for Europe and Survival Intensify

It was a dramatic week in the Premium Liiga, with champions Levadia continuing their dominant campaign, Paide Linnameeskond snatching a stoppage-time winner, and the battles for European qualification and survival becoming increasingly tense.

Levadia make another statement against Flora

Levadia showed no signs of a title-winning hangover as they came from behind to defeat Flora 3–1 in the 111th Tallinn derby.

Erik Sorga gave Flora an early lead from the penalty spot, but Levadia responded through Mihkel Ainsalu before João Pedro put the champions ahead with a superb curling finish in the 54th minute. Frank Liivak added a third in the 72nd minute to complete an impressive comeback.

The result extended Levadia’s advantage over second-placed Flora to 23 points, surpassing the previous Premium Liiga record gap between first and second. Levadia had already made history by securing the title with six rounds remaining, and they are now chasing an even more remarkable winning margin.

Levadia have also dominated this season’s Tallinn derbies, winning three of the four meetings with Flora and outscoring their rivals 11–4.

Orlov rescues Kalju, but European hopes remain uncertain

Nõmme Kalju were forced to settle for a 2–2 draw away to Pärnu JK Vaprus, despite a decisive contribution from substitute Mihhail Orlov.

Sten Jakob Viidas scored both goals for Vaprus, opening the scoring in the first half before restoring their lead after the break. Kalju responded through Mattias Männilaan’s penalty, won by Orlov, before the substitute set up Enrique Esono’s late equaliser in the 87th minute.

Orlov has now recorded seven goal contributions off the bench this season, including three goals and four assists. His return from injury could prove vital, but Kalju’s wider form remains a concern.

They have won just two of their last nine league matches, leaving their European qualification hopes under pressure. With fixtures against Levadia, Flora and Paide still to come, Kalju have little room for further dropped points.

Harju move closer to securing their place in the top flight

Harju JK Laagri took another major step towards securing their Premium Liiga status with a confident 2–0 victory over Nõmme United.

Daniil Rudenko opened the scoring with a superb free-kick in the fifth minute, before top scorer Karel Eerme headed home from a corner shortly after half-time.

The win followed Harju’s victory over Nõmme Kalju just days earlier. With five rounds remaining, Harju now hold a 13-point advantage over Nõmme United, who are battling to avoid relegation.

United’s struggles continued with a fourth consecutive league defeat. Head coach Eric Wynalda has experimented with different tactical approaches, but his side have managed only one victory in his first five matches in charge.

A crucial Nõmme derby against Kalju now offers United an opportunity to respond, but time is running out.

Švedovski strike leaves Narva Trans in serious trouble

Kuressaare strengthened their survival hopes with a vital 1–0 away win over Narva Trans, courtesy of another spectacular long-range strike from Aleksander Švedovski.

The Levadia loanee scored his first goals of the season in consecutive matches, finding the net against Flora before repeating the feat against Trans. His latest effort proved decisive in a match where the hosts struggled to create clear opportunities.

Kuressaare have now won back-to-back league matches and sit seven points clear of the relegation-playoff position occupied by Nõmme United. They are also just one point behind Pärnu Vaprus.

For Trans, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate. They remain eight points behind United with five matches remaining, and even a victory in their remaining head-to-head meeting would leave them needing other results to go their way. Kuressaare are now mathematically out of reach.

Lilander breaks Tammeka hearts in stoppage time

Paide Linnameeskond strengthened their position in the race for the remaining league medals with a dramatic 2–1 win over Tartu Tammeka.

Dawda Darboe put Paide ahead before Moussa Sambe equalised with a powerful finish just before half-time. Sambe was later sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Tammeka to navigate the closing stages with ten men.

Just as the match appeared destined for a draw, Michael Lilander struck in the 90+4th minute, finishing a superb pass from Aleksandr Šurõgin to secure all three points.

The result leaves Paide third with 54 points from 31 matches, three points ahead of Nõmme Kalju and seven clear of Tammeka. Paide also finished the season’s head-to-head meetings with Tammeka having won three of their four encounters.

The picture heading into the final rounds

With Levadia already crowned champions, attention is turning towards the remaining European places and the fight to stay in the division.

Paide have strengthened their hold on third place, but Kalju’s inconsistent form means the race is far from settled. Further down the table, Harju are closing in on safety, Kuressaare have given themselves valuable breathing room, and Narva Trans are running out of time.

Meanwhile, Levadia continue to set the standard. Their latest derby victory over Flora underlined just how dominant they have been this season, and there could still be another record breaking achievement to come before the campaign ends.
